Charity Tracker Survey - October - Feeling the Chill

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Probono Economics (PBE) have been working with the Charity Finance Group and the Institute of Fundraising to take the temperature of the charity sector and monitor the pressures being faced by charities and voluntary organisations across the UK.   This October report highlights the unpredictability charities face with further lockdowns and continued restrictions on large Christmas fundraising events affecting income.

Article: Whirlwind of change: charity finance professionals share their experience of the pandemic

A very interesting overview from Charity Finance Directors from small, medium, large and very large charities (with income over £50m) during Covid-19.  They describe the impact on income, reserves, feeling the strain, being "zoomed out", financial reporting, building back and investments.  It also includes a number of case studies looking in more detail at a number of charities

Report: Just one in 5 charities fully comply with rules on fundraising reporting

The law requires charities with more than £1million income to include a statement on fundraising in their annual report, providing details on six aspects of their approach to fundraising.  In 2020 the Fundraising Regular analysed the annual reports from 187 organisations - a sample of 10% and found only 21% were compliant.  The report aims to provide a benchmark for charities, highlighting good practice as well as areas where improvements can be made.

Snapshot of Charity Shop Survey 2020

While still waiting for a copy of the full Charity Retail Shop Survey report 2020, this article from Fundraising Magazine provides a snapshot of the key findings.  It's a smaller survey from most years, with data from 30 charities and covers the period before COVID-19 but data was collected after the pandemic had started.

Article - The future of gift aid

With approximately £180m of Gift Aid claimed each year wrongly, and £585m not claimed that could be, this article discusses how Covid-19 presents an opportunity to review and update Gift Aid.  It describes the current situation and and the work done to date by the Charity Finance Group and HMRC regarding improvements to the system.

Online article: Beyond the basics: how Chairs can make online meetings work for their board

This guidance from the Association of Chairs provides a detailed account of aspects to think about and do differently with online board meetings.  It uses Zoom as the example but acknowledges most online platforms have similar functions to use.   It includes designing the agenda differently, having a co-host and the use of voting tools

The article by John Williams, the Vice Chair of the Association of Chairs, offers 8 ideas for making a practical difference to the diversity of a Trustee board.  These include: Don't over prioritise the skill mix, Don't hide behind the fact you can't find any diverse candidates, and Do consider some diversity training for yourself

Report: Assessing the financial reserves of English and Welsh charities on the eve of the Covid-10 pandemic

A report  on the 12,000 sets of accounts filed with the Charity Commission and the concerning picture for many charities regarding expenditure and reserves.
